Top 10 most common computer failures and worries

Black screen, whimsical mouse, trailing hard drive, when it’s not the PC itself that is undoing… In the event of a material failure, it is better to know the actions that save.

My computer won’t turn on

You have tried everything, restarted your PC dozens of times, but nothing to do: your machine remains totally inert. A few simple gestures will allow you to make a diagnosis.

No reaction

When you press the power up button, nothing happens: no noise is heard, no lights are on (not even the green light on the Ethernet network jack), let alone the screen. Check that the power cable is properly pressed and connected to a power outlet, and the outlet is properly powered; plug in another device on it to check. If it’s a cell phone, maybe the battery is just flat! Plug it into the current, wait a few minutes and try again.

Update the PC

If the problem is not resolved, it is likely that the power supply will be affected. If it is out of service, it makes sense that nothing will turn on! It can also be undersized to the specific needs of an office PC. If you have just installed a new internal “gourmand” device (high-end graphics card, hard drive or Blu-ray burner), don’t look anymore: it’s the one that caused the power supply to fail. Disconnect the power cable from this device and try again.

If the power supply has rendered the core or its power insufficient, it must be replaced. On a desktop PC, it’s a fairly simple operation: a screwdriver is enough. But you must first get a new block, from a PC dealer, or online on Materiel. net, ou, for example. Choose a model of 600 or 650 watts minimum. With a mobile phone, you have to change the cable with the big black box (this is the power supply) that you plug into the mains. Count between 50 and 100 euros.

What Windows can do for you…

If you suspect a device to be the cause of your problems, but are unsure of the culprit’s identity, first use the Windows tools to help diagnose.

With Windows XP
Right-click on the Workstation, choose Properties, and then click Device Manager.   Click on the + sign to the left of the different categories: if a device is reported by a yellow question mark, it is that it does not work properly either because it is defective, either because its pilot is absent or not up to date; in this case, right-click, select Properties, then click the Driver tab and Update Driver.  Then follow the instructions.

With Windows 7
Open the Control Panel, select Small icons from the View by menu, double click Problem Resolution and click Hardware and Audio. The available options will help you in searching for faulty devices. There is no guarantee that this utility will make a reliable diagnosis or repair the fault, but it costs nothing to try.
